- Series Description
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) serves as a high-stakes proficiency test to assess the English language skills of international students wishing to study, train or work in English-speaking environments. The test has been regularly revised in light of findings from ongoing research and validation studies to ensure that it remains a valid and reliable measure. This volume brings together a set of research studies conducted between 2005 and 2010, sponsored under the auspices of the British Council/ IELTS Australia Joint-funded Research Program which provides annual grant funding to encourage research activity among IELTS test stakeholders around the world. The eight studies - four on reading and four on listening assessment - provide valuable test validity evidence and directly inform the continuing development of the IELTS Reading and Listening tests. The volume chronicles the evolution of the Reading and Listening tests in ELTS and IELTS from 1980 to the present day explains the rationale for revising these tests at various points in their history and the role played in this by research findings reviews and comments on the specific contribution of each study in this volume to the ongoing process of IELTS reading and listening test design and development.
This is a companion volume to the previously published IELTS Collected Papers on IELTS speaking and writing assessment. It will be of particular value to language testing researchers interested in IELTS as well as to institutions and professional bodies who use IELTS test scores. It will also be relevant to students, lecturers and researchers working more broadly in the field of English for Academic Purposes.
